‘Soul Train’ — the long running syndicated black music showcase known as the hippest trip in America — has long been known for its soulful music and lively dancing, but who could forget the show’s funky trend setting fashion?

That was definitely the theme at last night’s taping of the 2010 Soul Train Awards show in Atlanta, Georgia. Celebrities from all over the industry flooded the purple carpet at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Center, in looks that ranged from fresh and sophisticated, to glittery and over-the-top ensembles.

Returning hosts Taraji P. Henson and Terrence Howard dazzled on the red carpet in classic all black looks, while celebs like actress Kim Fields pushed the envelope in a form fitting leopard print dress and a blond curly Mohawk.

El Debarge and Faith Evans performed their new duet, ‘Lay With You,’ while walking through a new millinium version of the ubiquitous Soul Train Line.

On the red carpet, budding Def Jam diva Chrisette Michele made heads turn by wearing a turban-style headwrap that had more sequins than the 1960s. Freddie Jackson, on the other hand, didn’t mind wearing all white after Labor Day on this warm fall evening.

Other attendees included Melanie Fiona, Doug E . Fresh, Sean Garrett, Tamia, Janelle Monae, Goappelle, Rick Ross, Raven Symone, Rachelle Ferrell, Dionne Farris, Lalah Hathaway, Tank, Dwele, SWV, Kem, Biz Markie, Steve Harvey, Jazmine Sullivan, Barbie, Rozanda “Chilli” Thomas; along with honored guests Ron Isley and Anita Baker and of course — BET’s head honcho, Miss Debra Lee (pictured left).

Although there were plenty of guests that were dressed to the nines, there were also some that could have used a bit more work — or possibly a new stylist. That’s for you to be the judge.

The ‘2010 Soul Train Awards’ doesn’t air until Nov. 28, but until then check out the good, the bad, and the mu-fugly fashion looks from last night’s purple carpet
