In honor of the late Bob Marley, who died 30 years ago this week, Lauryn Hill performed two of the reggae legend’s songs on ‘Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.’ And unlike previous shows where critics and fans reamed her for being hours late and bludgeoning ears, this time she was actually good.

From these performances, it looks like Lauryn Hill and her band have finally developed a sound that’s much more palatable than her other poorly reviewed recent shows. Though both covers of Marley classics ‘Chances Are’ (above) and ‘Could You Be Loved’ (below) were revved up to a tempo much faster than the originals, Hill’s rough-hewn vocals seemed up to the task. It’s clear that she’s still working to get her voice back after performing only sporadically for years, but in these two clips she’s obviously enjoying herself. (She still has an unsettling habit of tapping her earpiece and continually egging on her band.)

And her playful, bold style choices – dooky gold chains layered Slick Rick-style on her neck and wrists, a colorful, floral floor-length muumuu under an African print jacket and brown fedora – only underlined that she appears to be in good spirits. (Could the shape-hiding dress mean she’s pregnant again?)

If Ms. Hill, as she likes to be referred to these days, puts together a string of similar feel-good shows, it may be grounds to say that she’s actually back for good. Her ‘Moving Target’ tour continues through the summer, and she’s set to perform an entire Marley set when she visits the Mezzanine in San Francisco on May 18.
