After years and years of fraternal organizations being under fire for hazing incidents on campuses across America, it would seem that the incidents would lessen and/or stop. Nothing could be further from the truth as a new case has popped up and has cost a mother her only son.
Cornell University is under fire for the wrongful death of a sophomore at the university. ABC reports that George Desdunes, 19, was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and in late February, was allegedly kidnapped by freshmen “pledges” of the fraternity, tied, bound and forced to drink until he passed out. But, he wasn’t just incapacitated, he was dead and found by the fraternity’s housekeeper in the library of the house the following morning.
Desdunes mother, Marie Lourdes Andre, is now suing the fraternity for $25 million and hopes that her lawsuit will benefit other parents and keep them from experiencing her tragedy. The fraternity has given a statement saying, “Members are expected to adhere to our fraternity policies and to uphold behavior consistent with our creed, ‘The True Gentleman.’ ”
Even though the reports say that he was a member of the fraternity, it is clear that this young black man was not an honored member of this white fraternity if this would be allowed. Hazing incidents usually happen to pledges, not members of the fraternity. But these pledges being allowed to carry out such an awful “task” against a member is unheard of!
According to an interview on NBC’s Today show this morning, his mother said that he thought being in the fraternity was going to help “open doors” for him after graduation. But instead, his aspirations of becoming a medical doctor were squashed by the fraternity.
