The same hand sanitizer used to stop the spread of germs has sent several California high school students to hospitals after they decided to get a buzz by drinking it, according to an ABC News report.

The new trend has the health community ringing the alarm to raise awareness of the alternative use for the ethyl alcohol-based solution.

Kids are making the elixir using a bit of chemistry— salt is used to purify the alcohol content, taking the solution from about 65 percent alcohol to 120 proof before they consume it.

In comparison, vodka is 80-proof.
