CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) –

A new timekeeping system for all Cleveland firefighters and EMS workers.

The time clocks are fallout from a pay scandal within the Cleveland Fire Department. Firefighters paid other firefighters under the table to work for them while they still collected a paycheck.

Firefighters and paramedics will now use a thumbprint to sign in and out, but they can also use a swipe card or an employee ID number. The old system was largely based on the merit system.

All of the timeclocks should be installed and functioning within the next month.

The city is spending $800K. That money will pay for the clocks and new software to handle firefighter and EMS scheduling and other personnel needs.
