AKRON, OH (WOIO) –
A Summit County jury has found John M. Carano, 54, of Lake Vista Road in Akron, guilty of two counts of Operating Under the Influence, both felonies of the fourth degree, and a specification for having five OVI convictions within 20 years.
On August 6, a Sheriff’s deputy noticed Carano twice crossing the median as he drove from Springfield Township to his home in Akron. The deputy, who pulled over Carano as he pulled into his own driveway, found two open cans of beer, a machete and a club in Carano’s car.
Carano refused the breathalyzer and failed the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) and Vertical Gaze Nystagmus (VGN) portions of the field sobriety test, during which the officer asks the suspect to follow the movement of an object with his eyes.
This was Carano’s 11th DUI.
Judge Tammy O’Brien will sentence him on June 28.
