There’s always some drama! Even though Rodney King won a $3.8 million dollar settlement following the infamous 1991 LAPD beating, the late 47-year-old leaves behind uncertainty on how he died and no money to cover his funeral costs.
King’s fiancée, Cynthia Kelley, seen below, found him dead at the bottom of his backyard pool following a day of alleged binge drinking. Autopsy results will not be available for weeks, but aside from Kelley’s claims that King was hitting the bottle hard during the hours before his death, police recovered marijuana plants from his Rialto home.

King’s funeral costs are expected to run upwards of $22,000, and his family is now asking the public for donations via a memorial fund to help give King a proper burial. His three daughters and other family members are “desperately” trying to secure funding for the funeral, but the family’s said, “They need the money.”
Information on donating to the memorial fund, however, has yet to be released. King reportedly spent his lawsuit winnings on houses, a construction business and a record label. A memorial commemorating King’s life and death was held outside his home Saturday evening. The event was organized by Los Angeles Civil Rights Association President Eddie Jones, who said during the gathering, “His legacy will live on as a man who survived a horrendous beating.”
The funeral, which will be open to the public, is slated for June 30th at 2pm at the Hall of Liberty. King’s fiancée is not on the guest list. King will be buried later that day at the Forest Lawn cemetery in the Hollywood Hills.
