Baldwin Wallace University is not just talking about sustainable living.
Thursday, the University opened the doors on a new dorm that expects students to live the lifestyle.
47 students moved into Harding House on the BW campus Thursday morning. And it’s not your everyday dorm.
There’s a greenhouse, a still under construction straw bale shed, rain barrels, a rooftop garden and planters for growing organic food and bioswale gardens.
David Krueger is the Co-Director of BW’s sustainability program.
“We can’t just teach sustainability in the classroom, we’ve got to try to live it and try to lead by example,” Krueger said.
Even still the students dorm room electricity will be monitored. There’s a large kitchen that will hopefully encourage students to make their own meals with the food they’ll grow.
An indoor bike storage area built to discourage the use of cars.
BW has the state’s first undergrad degree in Sustainability, and Kevin Warman is in the program and lives in the Harding House.
“I’m thinking of higher education and hopefully educating others on living alternative lifestyles that will be healthy for the environment and for society in general,” Warman said.
Harding House appears to be a big success in it’s first year – there’s a waiting list to get in.
