When it comes to fending off the insects this summer that can cause Lyme disease, West Nile virus, and other diseases and ailments, citronella candles and staying in doors are just not the best remedies. Very often, we hear of insecnt repellents that contain DEET in them. What is DEET and how can we use insect repellents with DEET in them effectively?

DEET, which is shortened for N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide, is a versatile and effective insect repellent ingredient. Insect repellents containing DEET have been used to repel mosquitoes, ticks, fleas, biting flies and chiggers. Repellants containing DEET are available in many formulations, including: lotions, creams, gels, aerosols and sprays. Insect repellents can reduce the risk of mosquito and tick bites, but products containing DEET must be used properly and safely. Here are some Important facts about repellants containing DEET that should be observed:

1. Do NOT use repellants containing DEET on newborns. If your child is younger than two months, try to avoid environments where insects will be present altogether or use a mosquito net over his stroller.

2. Use a product with a concentration of 30 percent DEET and apply it just once a day.

3. Spray the product into your hands and then rub it onto your child; avoid spraying the product directly on him.

4. Apply the repellant to exposed skin only. Be sure to avoid the eyes, mouth and even broken skin.

5. Be sure to wash the treated skin with soap and water after returning indoors for the day.
