With warmer temperatures at our heels, there is quality time to be spent at the beach, near the pool with friends, or just outside getting relaxation. With all of these activities outdoors, it’s important to shield your skin from the sun’s harmful rays. No matter your skin type, color or race or ethnicity, sunscreen needs to be apart of your beauty regimen as all skin types have the potential to become burned by the sun. So this “Health/Beauty Wellness Wednesday” let’s explore some sunscreen application tips that ensure tremendous coverage for the largest organ of your body, your skin.

1. Be Sure To Use Plenty

When it comes to sunscreen, it is important to apply enough that covers exposed areas on the body. Make sure that an ample amount is spread and absorbed on your arms, legs, back, stomach and that face. The recommended application for adequate protection is 35 to 40ml per person per session… in other words, it is about a handful, your handful. So for example, if you do not apply enough and you are applying an SPF 15 lotion on your skin, it will probably be equivalent to SPF8. So use enough out there!

2. Budget Brands Are Great Alternatives

Who says you need a name brand sunscreen for your skin? Check with a health care professional if there is a cheaper brand out there that you feel will work for you and your family. Budget brands have the potential to be just as effective as their expensive counterparts. So get those great deals and apply!

3. Use Correct Application

Sunscreen should be applied to clean, dry skin 30 minutes before exposure to the sun which allows it time to absorb properly. The lotion has to absorb so it can be effective. Make sure you pay special attention to your face. You may want to apply a bit more. Wait 30 min and then reapply another coat. Your face can burn more easily than other parts of your body. So make sure that you pay special attention to your face.

4. That Sunscreen May Need To Be Re-Applied

If you are planning a full day out at the beach, then you are talking about hours of soaking up some sun. Chances are that you may need to re-apply your sunscreen. Perspiration, exercise, swimming and towel-drying removes sun can remove the effects of some sun screens and creams from the skin, even though the brand may say water-proof. It is a great rule of thumb to be safe than sorry. So simply re-apply that sunscreen to your precious skin every 30-45 minutes.

5. Think 15

When purchasing sunscreen, make sure that you purchase one SPF of at least 15. Many use an SPF of 30 everyday. But for many, fifteen is a great place to start! Check with your health care professional or dermatologist to see what works best for you.

6. Children And Babies Require Special Sunscreen Care

When having fun in the sun, make sure to pay special attention to babies and kids; they need greater protection so use specially formulated lotions for children as they will have gentler yet effective ingredients and higher SPFs.

And finally keep some in your purse and make sure to use it. Many sunscreens come in travel sizes and tubes. If your sunscreen is about three weeks old, you may consider throwing it out. The fresher creams, the better chance you have at fighting the signs of aging. So take heed and have a great summer with great skin!
