A teen from Queens New York was arrested after she allegedly stabbed her brother to death with a kitchen knife after an argument over a cell phone escalated into a physical fight.
18 year old Yocairis Diaz (seen below) , allegedly stabbed her brother, 20-year-old Frank Fortuna, in the neck with the knife in the living room of their Woodhaven home about 5:30 p.m. Friday. “If you don’t get here fast, I’m going to kill this guy!” Diaz reportedly told 911 operators before the stabbing.
The siblings 19-year-old brother Kelvin Diaz witnessed the stabbing; he told police it started after Fortuna tried to take Diaz’s cell phone.
Fortuna picked up a dog chain and Diaz pulled a knife—Diaz allegedly told a neighbor that her brother was strangling her at one point. Diaz, her two brothers, and their mother all lived in the home together.
Bryant Aracena, who lives upstairs from the victim, said this was par for the course for the family: “When they fought, you could hear the walls shake and furniture being slammed around…It got to the point where the brothers came out into the street and got into a few fistfights,” he added. “It’s like they were trying to kill each other. These people have some serious problems.”
Aracena called Diaz “very hostile and a big troublemaker,” saying that “the mom would try to keep her out of the house because she would always fight with her brothers when she was there.” But her father, Jose Diaz, told the News she was just acting in self-defense: “She just got tired of being abused by him.”
Her friend, Nina Ortiz, said Diaz tried to move away from her brother, who had a prior arrest for assault and often picked fights with her. Another neighbor, Ramon McPherson, said: “I don’t know how to explain what happened. It’s sibling rivalry gone wrong.”
Diaz has been charged with second-degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon. Fortuna was one of six people who were killed during a spate of shootings and stabbings throughout the city Friday night into Saturday morning.
