CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) –
One issue voters in Cuyahoga County will decide is the future of Cleveland Schools.
A levy on the ballot that some say could make or break the district.
Several members of the Urban Educational Justice League are letting it be known they don’t want to see Issue 107 passed. “Vote no for issue 107″chanted the small group outside the Board of Elections with a loud message.
They say the state should oversee the Cleveland Schools.
“Nothing has changed in five years. They have only misallocated funds. There’s no accountability. The only reason they’re accountable now because we’ve been watching them.”, said Donna Brown.
Those who support Issue 107 also known as the Cleveland Schools Levy say if their plan doesn’t pass there will be a $50 million deficit for the district and hundreds of teachers will be out of a job.
What will it cost the average homeowner? About $300 bucks a year, but many will pay more.
The big guns also weighing in, we sat down with the Rev. Jesse Jackson and Cleveland native Don King about the issue.
“When you run the foot race of life you’re in it to win it. You can’t give in you can’t give up and you can’t quit. So we are here to make that levy pass. When you vote tomorrow vote for that levy,” said Don King.
“Education on the front side incarceration on the backside. Schools cost less than jails. Investment in education is a sound proposition,” said Rev. Jesse Jackson.
But for the Urban Educational Justice League protesting the levy it comes down to this, “it’s not up to the property owners to educate the public schools it is actually the state of Ohio.”
