In the 1990s, child actress Maia Campbell was on top of the world, starring with L.L. Cool J on the hit sitcom “In the House.” After the show was canceled, however, she developed a crystal meth addiction and soon hit rock bottom. Eventually, videos surfaced on the Internet showing Maia disheveled and strung out.

On the November 17 episode of “Iyanla: Fix My Life,” relationship expert Iyanla Vanzant works with Maia to reestablish her family relationships and work through unresolved guilt for the pain she caused her now-deceased mother.

When her mother was dying, Maia says she wasn’t even allowed to see her. “[My family] thought I would cause problems,” she tells Iyanla. “They wouldn’t let me talk to her on the phone.”

“Maia, you were high,” says Iyanla. “Until you can say to me, ‘I did drugs. I ran the streets. I threw my dreams away,’ it will always be about them and you will always be powerless. You gotta own your stuff.”
