Namedrop Jody Watley in a conversation, and it’s only a matter of minutes before someone busts out into a rendition of “Looking for a New Love” and shows off their hottest ’80s dance moves. With her seductive voice and style, Watley had the power to get everybody moving.

Watley got her start as a dancer on the popular TV dance show “Soul Train” at just 14 before forming the R&B group Shalamar in 1977. As one-third of the trio that sang hits like “This Is For The Lover In You” and “A Night to Remember,” Watley’s beauty looks consisted of voluminous curls, bright blush and red lipstick. But once the Chicago-born star struck out on her own with a pop sound in the late ’80s, she debuted an edgier, wavy hairstyle and bolder brows.

Watley showed off her stunning looks on countless magazine covers, including Jet, Essence and the Japanese high-fashion glossy, SPUR. She was also featured in the Harper’s Bazaar 1989 “Ten Most Beautiful Women” issue — inspiring teenage girls all over to tease their hair just a little higher. And the music icon continues to sport her signature “Larger Than Life” hair, winged-out liner and brightly-colored lipstick.
