CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) – Piece by piece cranes took apart the pedestrian bridge damaged beyond repair in a Saturday morning run in with a dump truck.
“I was just amazed that one man’s mistake could cause so many people so much discomfort,” said Andrew Braxton.
Crews braced the dangling bridge with median dividers and carefully removed the overpass.
Neighbors watched as a piece of Collinwood’s history was dismantled.
“There’s a lot of memories to it. It’s part of the neighborhood. Just like you don’t want to see the arch go down at Euclid Beach, you don’t want to see this come down either,” said Barbara Mullaly.
“It was a shortcut because I stay over on Nottingham. My uncle lives over here, and me and my son enjoyed it. We rode our bikes across it,” said Derek Tigner.
ODOT’s contractors worked feverishly through the weekend hoping to open all of the lanes of I-90 before the Monday morning rush hour.
