CLEVELAND – Cuyahoga County Executive Ed Fitzgerald announced during a news conference Tuesday morning that a dozen deputies from the Cuyahoga County Sheriff Department’s Impact Unit will be added to the large security team at the upcoming Cleveland Marathon.

Fitzgerald detailed plans of the security partnership for the 36th Annual Cleveland Rite Aid Marathon to be held Sunday, May 19.

The security partnership was announced in the wake of the terrorist attack with two bombs exploding near the finish line of the Boston Marathon April 15.

The explosions killed three people and injured more than 280 others.

The annual race attracts 18,000 runners on Sunday of race weekend.

The marathon always has teams of security and medical personnel, but expect to see extra staffing this year in uniform and undercover.
