“American Idol” producers are scrambling to bring what was once FOX’s highest rated program back to its glory days. According to TMZ, last week’s ratings were the worst since the show debuted in 2002 and now execs are looking to shake up with judges table, again.

Former “Idol” judge Jennifer Lopez is scheduled to appear on the show’s finale to debut her new single, and TMZ reports the producers want her to come back for the remaining of the season.

Sources also told the Hollywood Reporter that Fox executives had a secret plot to replace current judge Mariah Carey with the “Jenny From the Block” singer. However, this dramatic plan was dropped after Carey’s team responded with threat of litigation.

Looks like the plan to jump-start the show is still up in the air — and word on the street is the other three judges aren’t guaranteed spots for next season either.

We will be sure to keep you updated on this developing story. But until then, take a look at three characteristics we feel “Idol” producers should look for in a new judge.
