The study filmed 40 psychology students – half men and half women – answering a basic hypothetical question. Nineteen students whose answers contained humor were termed “actors,” and their videos were played for the following students, who were asked to rank them in terms of suitability for a short-term relationship (as short as a one-night stand, in fact) or a long-termone. Based on the answers, the researchers determined that male wit “nurtures an impression of not being serious or willing to invest in a mate.”
