‘I’m a sexual predator, I need help’

CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) –

19 Action News Reporter Scott Taylor is learning much more about Ariel Castro from his own words – a reported suicide note he wrote years ago.

In the letter, Castro claims he treated the three women well and then admits later that he’s sick.

The police found a letter inside Castro’s house of horrors and investigators believe it was written by Castro in 2004 after he had captured Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight.

Castro allegedly wrote, “I am a sexual predator. I need help.”

Castro goes into detail how he lured Knight into his house after meeting her at a dollar store. He chronicles how he lured Berry into his vehicle by offering her a ride. He’s surprised how young DeJesus, then 14, really is after locking her up inside his home. He thought she was a lot older.

He writes, “They are here against their will because they made a mistake of getting in a car with a total stranger.”

Castro talks about his children and about killing himself and giving all the money he’s saved to his victims.

After he abducted DeJesus he said, “I don’t know why I kept looking for another. I already had two in my possession.”

In jail on a ‘suicide precaution’

CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) –

We’ve learned the Cuyahoga County Jail is now holding Ariel Castro, 52, under what it calls “suicide precaution”.
A spokesperson describes that as one step down from a “suicide watch”.
Castro is facing charges for holding three women; Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus, Michelle Knight and Amanda’s six-year-old daughter, who was born in captivity, as hostages for years.
Police say he sexually abused the three women.
Castro went to the county jail Thursday morning after sitting in the city jail until his first court appearance.
The jail is holding Castro in his own cell being watched by a guard 24-7. That guard is watching in addition to the regular guard assigned to watch over that pod of cells.
A jail doctor evaluated Castro just after he arrived-standard practice for every inmate. He is described as “despondent”.
We reported previously, Castro had been held by himself in the city jail, and he had been taunted and harassed by other inmates about the nature of his crimes.
Vehicles searched in his case
CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) – 19 Action News Reporter Ed Gallek is learning more about how investigators are gathering evidence in the case against Ariel Castro, the man accused of kidnapping and raping three women held against their will for years.

Investigators searched Ariel Castro’s three vehicles on Thursday and now, the Ohio Attorney General’s Office has been brought into the case.

19 Action News has learned the AG’s Office has been requested to test and analyze the evidence collected by the FBI and the Cleveland Police.

Investigators went through the vehicles at a Cleveland Police impound lot.

Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight were rescued from Castro’s Seymour Avenue home on Monday. The women had been held against their will and sexually assaulted for years.

Berry went missing in 2003 a day shy of her 17th birthday. DeJesus disappeared as she walked home from school in 2004 at the age of 14. Knight went missing in 2002 at the age of 21.

Castro held in $8 million bond

CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) –

The man suspected of holding three women captive inside his west side home for years was in court on Thursday morning.

Ariel Castro, 52, is charged with four counts of kidnapping and three counts of rape. Castro did not speak a word, and hung his head during much of the court proceeding. His bond was set at $8 million dollars. [Charging documents]

Before a crush of media and massive cheering crowds, Berry and DeJesus returned home on Wednesday. Knight was readmitted to the hospital and is listed in good condition.

Deputy Chief Ed Tomba said the women only left the house two times in 10 years. Both times they went from the house to the garage, and they were in disguise.

Castro’s brothers, Onil and Pedro, will not face any charges at this time. Authorities say Onil and Pedro were arrested only because they were with Ariel at the time of his arrest.

Onil and Pedro did also appear in court on Thursday on the unrelated charges. They were released from jail around 10:30 a.m.
