For an upcoming episode of “Oprah’s Next Chapter,” Oprah Winfrey sits down with some of her costars in “Lee Daniels’ The Butler” to talk about the film and its message. The movie spans the life of Cecil Gaines (Forest Whitaker), a sharecropper’s son who served as a White House butler for eight presidential terms. The decades-spanning drama deals with important moments in the civil rights movement and ends with the election of President Barack Obama in 2008.

British-born actor David Oyelowo, who plays Whitaker and Winfrey’s son in the film, says he sees the movie as a love letter to America. “I just think you’d be hard pressed to find another country on planet earth who has made the strides this country did in the 20th century,” he says.

Through its depiction of the civil rights movement, Oyelowo says the film shows the country’s struggle and fight for freedom. “I just think that this country celebrates freedom and the right to it in ways that very, very few other countries — I certainly can’t think of any — have managed to,” he says.
