CLEVELAND– Mayor Frank Jackson’s administration is moving forward with another development project that would change the area near North Coast Harbor on Lake Erie.

This week, the city received five proposals for developments on two parcels of land.

This is the first step in a lengthy process to add housing, restaurants, shops and possibly a hotel in the area, approximately 30 acres, north of FirstEnergy Stadium and near the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum.

“I think it’d be a great idea to have more access to the water, some more things to do and some places to go in the city. I think that’d be great,” said Sheila Sheline, a tourist from Michigan.

The owner of Cumberland Development, Richard Pace, is one of the individuals who submitted a proposal, but he won’t elaborate on his plans because a formal bidding process may be necessary in the near future.

“Any city would die to have that kind of property available for development! You look at the great cities and they embrace their waterfront,” said Pace.

The Chief of Regional Development in Cleveland said the mayor wanted to open the process to any interested parties.

The planning process could take several months; with groundbreaking not taking place for a few years.

“Something we haven’t had on our lakefront, really this part of our lakefront ever, which is some investment – private investment – that brings jobs and opportunity for people to live on the waterfront,” said Chris Warren.

The idea of lakefront living or development is appealing to many Northeast Ohioans, including Nicole Zingale from Cleveland. “I think it’s a great idea and I think Cleveland residents would definitely benefit from that, so yes, it’d be beautiful!”
