CLEVELAND – It is still months away, but if you do not have plans to ring in the New Year yet, you may want to make plans to come to downtown Cleveland.

For the first time, people can ring in the New Year on Public Square on Dec. 31.

The event is called Cleveland Rocks New Year’s Eve Celebration and it was announced Tuesday on the steps of Cleveland City Hall by the Ohio Homecoming group and city and county officials.

The celebration will feature live entertainment, special guests, fireworks, food trucks and, of course, a countdown to the new year.

The event has been years in the making, said Ohio Homecoming Managing Partner Alonzo Mitchell.

“Cleveland Rocks New Year’s Eve Celebration is a five-year culmination of all the hard work and determination of a core group of young professionals who still love and live in Cleveland. No longer can Cleveland be a bystander while every other city in the country celebrates New Year’s Eve. We’ve got to get off the bench,” said Mitchell.

Cuyahoga County Executive Ed Fitzgerald said the county was happy to partner with the city and Ohio Homecoming for the event and he said he looks forward to a “great celebration.”

The free event will also feature a beer garden and a live ice sculpting show as part of the fun.

“This event is just another example of how we want to showcase Cleveland,” Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson said Tuesday.
