CLEVELAND — Mayor Frank Jackson and Gov. John Kasich were together at Upper Edgewater Park Tuesday.

That’s when Kasich announced the state was getting a $72 million windfall from the federal government, a redistribution of highway money that went unspent in other states.

Kasich and Jackson said the Ohio Department of Transportation would put $3 million of that windfall into the Shoreway project.

That cuts Cleveland’s cost from $7 million to $4 million.

Known as the Lakefront West project, it is designed to bring the water closer for residents of the city’s West Side neighborhoods. It will turn the 2.5-mile, 50-mph freeway between West Boulevard and the Main Avenue Bridge into a divided, tree-lined, 35-mph boulevard.

It will eliminate several freeway interchanges and make it easier for West Side residents to cross the Shoreway and reach the lakefront.
