CLEVELAND – The Ohio Department of Transportation is closing I-90 eastbound closure Thursday morning at 9, which means commuters should expect major delays along a number of highways

The eastbound side of the Innerbelt Bridge–I-90 EB between I-490 & I-77–is closing Thursday morning at 9 a.m. That closure will last until Monday morning at 6 a.m.

Westsiders who commute into downtown will not have access to the Innerbelt bridge during Friday morning’s commute. This means major delays for the Friday morning ride, especially on I-90 EB, I-490 EB, Jennings NB and I-71 and I-77 NB.

The obvious detour is 490 EB to 77 NB, however expect heavy backups on this route. Some other options include the Shoreway, Lorain Avenue, or Detroit Avenue. (See map below.)

Heading north, drivers can use Pearl Road or W. 25th Street instead of the congested northbound routes. Broadway Avenue and Woodland Avenue are also options when the highways are backed up.

I-71 NB backs up regularly during the morning rush because there is only one lane of traffic north of Jennings Freeway.

Thursday night at 8 p.m., 90 WB across the Innerbelt Bridge will be closed as well. However it will reopen by 6 a.m. on Friday morning and traffic on 90 WB should be unaffected by this closure for the Friday morning rush hour. However Friday night ODOT will be closing the WB side of 90 as well. The westbound side of 90 will be closed between 77 and 490 Friday night at 8 p.m. until Monday morning at 6 a.m.

The good news is when 90 reopens by Monday, all traffic will be using the new Innerbelt Bridge.
