For an actor, there isn’t much higher praise than that of the person being portrayed believing he is watching himself on screen.

The star of “Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom” couldn’t be happier about the South African icon’s confusion.

Idris Elba, who has yet to meet Nelson Mandela due to the former leader’s frail health, shared the story on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” Wednesday, saying of Mandela’s comment: “I took that as a compliment.” (At 3:03 below.)

“Long Walk to Freedom” producer Anant Singh was the person who brought the footage of Elba to Mandela during filming, and recalls the moment in more detail below.

“Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom” opens nationwide on Nov. 29.
