*With the announcement of the 2014 Screen Actors Guild nominations early this morning, the upcoming award season is underway.

And those nominations bode well for at least two black themed films, “12 Years a Slave” and “Lee Daniels’ The Butler.” Those

In fact, “12 Years a Slave” led the nominations with 4 which included: outstanding performance by a cast in a motion picture, outstanding performance by a male actor in a leading role (Chiwetel Ejiofor), outstanding performance by a male actor in a supporting role (Michael Fassbender) and outstanding performance by a female actor in a supporting role (Lupita Nyong’o).

As we’ve also reported, the film has been well received by the Boston Society of Film Critics which awarded the film its top prize and the New York Film Critics Online named it their best picture of the year.

Meanwhile, “Lee Daniels’ The Butler” garnered three nominations: Oprah Winfrey was nominated for outstanding performance by a female actor in a supporting role; Forest Whitaker was among the nominees for outstanding performance by male actor in a leading role and it also received a nom for outstanding performance by a cast in a motion picture.

With these nominations, the two films have perhaps solidified their status as front-runners for the Oscars because the SAG Awards is considered to be one of the best indicators of success for the Academy Awards.

Look for the 20th annual SAG awards to air Jan. 18, 2014 at 8pm Eastern on TNT and TBS.
