MEDINA, OH (WOIO) – The Medina Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol has some tips on how to drive safely in the winter, and what to do in the event of a breakdown or a crash.

According to their report, nearly 19,000 crashes occurred in winter conditions. Of these accidents, 42 people were killed and a little over 5,000 injured. 56 percent listed speed as a factor.

First, give yourself extra time to get to where you’re going. Allowing plenty of time means you don’t have to speed or stress about being late.

Secondly, leave plenty of space between you and the traffic ahead. Stopping takes twice as long, and the more space you maintain means you will have more time to stop.

All movements, like accelerating, turning and breaking take longer on icy roads.

Remember, bridges and overpasses freeze quickly, take extra caution when driving over them.

Should you breakdown, turn on your hazards, get as far off the road as possible, and call for help. Calling #677 will get you assistance.
