SHAKER HEIGHTS, Ohio – Another Northeast Ohio city has banned cell phone use while driving.
Shaker Heights Council passed an ordinance this week that bans drivers from using cell phones. More stringent than Ohio state law, this ban includes all use of smartphones, laptops, PDAs and other wireless devices — not just texting.
Using a phone while driving will be a primary offense in Shaker Heights, meaning that a police officer can pull drivers over just for using their phones. A first-degree misdemeanor, it will carry a potential maximum penalty of six months in jail and a $1,000 fine.
