The Republican National Committee (RNC) announced this afternoon that Cleveland is one of six cities in the running to host the party’s 2016 presidential nominating convention.

City officials visited Washington, D.C. last month to pitch Cleveland to RNC leadersalong with representatives from Cincinnati, Dallas, Denver, Kansas City, Las Vegaas, Columbus and Phoenix.

Columbus and Phoenix were eliminated, the RNC announced today.

Cleveland has hosted the Republican Convention twice, in 1924 and 1936.

Next, a small technical team will visit Cleveland to take a deeper look at financing, convention venues, media workspace and lodging, and then the field will be narrowed further in mid May. Those visits will determine which cities get a visit by the full site selection committee.

They won’t be coming to be wined, dined and wowed so much as to determine whether these cities have the amenities that they said they did in their presentations said Cuyahoga County Republican Chair Rob Frost. Like do you have the hotel rooms and are they as close as you said they are.
