Here are a few scenarios where a typical guy might not be on his most grown-up behavior. You don’t have to let him get away with bad behavior, but adjusting the tone of your response might save the situation:

He says: “Babe, do we really have to go to this party tonight?”

You want to say: “Oh my god, you always do this an hour before we have plans with my friends. It’s so annoying!”

You should say: “I know you had a long day, but it’s going to be really fun and it’s been a while since we had a night out together. I really want to be with you tonight.”

Note: Try not to snap at him, which never gets anybody anywhere, but don’t start by saying “We don’t have to go if you don’t want to” or “If it gets boring, we’ll leave early!” If you concede right away, even a little bit, he might insist on bailing, and you’ll end up feeling resentful. Instead, make sure he knows this is important to you, and that should make him more likely to buck up.
