At eight months pregnant most women don’t want to stand for longer than ten minutes, let alone compete in a race. But 28-year-old Alysia Montano is not just remaining active during her pregnancy she’s continuing her career as an athlete.

The 28-year-old ran the 800 meters on Thursday in the U.S. Track and Field Championship. The five time national champion finished in 2 minutes and 32.13 seconds, nearly 35 seconds slower than her personal best in Monaco in 2010.

Although The University of California Star finished last, she wasn’t fazed as she received a rousing ovation finishing her first lap that only grew louder when she crossed the finish line.

“I just didn’t want to get lapped and be the first person to get lapped in the 800,” said the 34-week-pregnant athlete.

Of course all of this activity was under a physician’s supervision. Doctors not only gave Montano the OK to compete but encouraged her to. Other doctors warn that Montano could continue to run because her body was used to that type of activity, but they don’t necessarily recommend the same for other women.
