As emotions begin to rise from the throngs of supporters gathering Monday outside the Friendly Temple Missionary Baptist Church for the funeral of slain youth Michael Brown (pictured), who was senselessly murdered at the hands of Ferguson, Mo. policeman Darren Wilson, the heat index is also soaring.  A number of EMS crews will reportedly be stationed nearby just as a precaution for the attendees of the memorial, who will be standing outside possibly battling triple digit temps, according to KSDK News.

The medical crews are expected to deal with some heat-related illnesses, particularly since there have reportedly been many who have taken ill due to the extreme heat in Ferguson and surrounding areas. Over the weekend, at least 26 people have been treated for heat stroke in St. Louis County, four of whom had to be hospitalized.

According to the Mayo Clinic, heat stroke can be life-threatening, as it is the most-serious form of heat injury that can cause damage to the brain and internal organs.  The medical emergency that results from prolonged exposure to high temps mostly affects older adults, but it can also take a serious toll on younger athletes.

Symptoms of heat stroke can include red/hot/dry skin, lack of sweating despite the heat, nausea, seizures, confusion, disorientation, sometimes loss of consciousness, or even coma.

Meanwhile, the St. Louis city health director, who spoke to KSDK News, cautioned those attending Brown’s memorial attendees to try to get a dose of air-conditioning at least 15 minutes every hour and to stay hydrated by drinking lots of water.
