DETROIT – The Southfield Freeway in Detroit is closed in both directions because of a bridge collapse.
The bridge that has collapsed is the Cathedral Road pedestrian overpass. The Southfield is closed from I-96 to Joy Road.
The accident happened shortly before 6:00 a.m.
Diane Cross with MDOT says they believe a waste hauler was driving on the freeway with the flatbed up. It then hit the bridge and brought it down. However, the accident is still under investigation and a final determination of what happened has not yet been reached.
Among the people stuck in the backup is Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford, who was on his way to practice. We have learned that he was picked up by Detroit Lions security.
