If Black women are ever going to see themselves more on TV and in film, Reagan Gomez insists that more of us have got to take charge behind the scenes.

One of the big things that stands out to us about this current season of TV is how many brown girls are gracing the prime-time lineup on network television. There are more now than there have seemingly ever been at one time, and they’re on great shows with fantastic writing! And they’re leading the casts! The options aren’t endless yet, but it’s good to have a few more than Black female TV lovers normally would. Reagan believes that this is thanks in large part to Black women making more of an impact on the creative side.

“I think we’re in a great time right now. There are more black women starring on prime-time TV shows than ever before. Film….not so much. But we can’t stop,” Reagan told Team Beautiful. “We have to make sure that this new ‘trend’ isn’t a trend at all…but a reality. Normal. The standard.”

Clearly, Shonda Rhimes is dominating on ABC Thursdays with “Grey’s Anatomy,” ” Scandal,” and “How To Get Away With Murder.” Reagan looks to her as an example of what needs to be happening in the writers’ rooms and production offices throughout Hollywood.

“The only way we can do that is to have more black women and women of color behind the scenes,” Reagan advocated. “Creating the content. Calling the shots. More black women in power positions in studios. More show runners.”

She continued, “We need more black women and women of color everywhere. That is the only way you’ll continue to have women starring in shows and creating shows on tv.”

Reagan anticipates that it will be tougher to effect the same change on the big screen, but the journey to more representation for Black women in movies would be largely the same.

She said in conclusion,”It’s a lot harder for film. A whole lot harder. But same principle.”
