As expected, Ray Rice won his appeal against the NFL’s indefinite suspension. The ruling was expected by some to be handed down prior to Thanksgiving but there was no way the NFL was going to let that depressing and damning news story overwhelm its slate of holiday games. So naturally it was pushed back to Friday afternoon, where it will have nearly two days to be digested and examined before NFL games are played again.
Now that Rice is once again eligible to play in the NFL, the question becomes whether a team will actually sign him. Troubled players getting second and third chances after terrible deeds is hardly uncommon in the NFL, though the extent to which Rice has been a national story that has transcended football and pushed a conversation about domestic violence suggests his return to the league won’t be happening at least in 2014. Richie Incognito hasn’t found a team willing to sign him following his bullying scandal last year with the Dolphins, though a few teams have talked with him this season.
