CLEVELAND — The Cleveland sports scene continues to garner national attention.

Cleveland will host the 2018 and 2019 USA Triathlon Age Group National Championships, the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission and USA Triathlon announced in conjunction with the City of Cleveland and Cleveland Metroparks at Edgewater Park Wednesday.

The competitions will take place August 11-12, 2018 and August 10-11, 2019 at Edgewater Park and through surrounding neighborhoods in Cleveland.

Approximately 5,000 athletes and 10,000 fans are expected to compete and attend USA Triathlon’s signature event, which could generate as much as $13 million of economic impact for Cleveland and surrounding communities in Northeast Ohio.

The Age Group National Championships feature a Saturday Olympic-distance triathlon, which includes a 1,500-meter swim, 40-kilometer bike and 10-kilometer run. The top athletes in each age group will represent Team USA at the International Triathlon Union Age Group World Championships in Lausanne, Switzerland in 2019 and Edmonton, Alberta, Canada in 2020.

On Sunday, there will be a sprint triathlon that is open to public competitors. The sprint will feature a 750-meter swim, 20-kilometer bike ride and five-kilometer run along the shores of Lake Erie.

The swim portion of the competition will take place at Edgewater Park, while the bike and run segments will happen along the Detroit-Shoreway, Downtown Cleveland, St. Clair-Superior and University Circle neighborhoods.
