DISCUSSION: Would You Give Your Social Media Password to an Employer?

SEATTLE — When Justin Bassett interviewed for a new job, he expected the usual questions about experience and references. So he was astonished when the interviewer asked for something else: his Facebook username and password. Bassett, a New York City statistician, had just finished answering a few character questions when the interviewer turned to her computer to search for his Facebook page. But she couldn’t see his private profile. She turned back and asked him to hand over his login information.

DISCUSSION: Have Trayvon Martin and Troy Davis Prove That Racism is Alive?

When I see the evolution of the case of Trayvon Martin, the 17-year-old boy who was killed by a night watchman under suspicious circumstances, I am both impressed and concerned. I am impressed that the world has come together to find justice for Trayvon. His death will not be in vain; for, I am sure there is a legislator who will be able to more readily pass an important gun control law as a result of Trayvon’s sacrifice. His death may save quite a few lives.

DISCUSSION: Is There Shame Attached To Being Celibate, Especially From A Religious Viewpoint?

I was saddened to learn of the resignation this week of Gabino Zavala, Auxiliary Bishop of the Los Angeles Roman Catholic Archdiocese. This is not another sexual abuse case involving a priest. Like many, I am skeptical of the Catholic Church. It's a sketchy place. And yet, as a resident of Los Angeles, I benefit from the Church's moral and financial presence here -- a presence that lifts up entire sections of the city. This is particularly the case in Latino communities, which make up 65 percent of the 5 million Catholics living in Los Angeles. The strength of these communities is the strength of LA.

DISCUSSION: Why Women Are Drawn To Men Who Don't Like Them

One of our favorite sites Shine posted a story that, in their words, ‘proves all women are nuts’. Researchers at a University in Virginia found that when women were presented with men who, from their Facebook profile, liked them, men who didn’t and men who couldn’t say either way, the women found themselves interested in the guys who didn’t like them. Yep, you read it right, ladies like the men that don’t like them. Great. My question is though; why do we like guys who don’t like us? Wouldn’t it be so much easier to like someone who actually liked you back?

DISCUSSION: Is Affection Gradually Declining as Sexuality ovecomes Sensuality?

I am a legal prostitute. A courtesan. A working girl. I am all of these adjectives and many more. I happily and proudly make my living working in a legal brothel. My blatant acknowledgement of this fact might cause your heart to race. Whether out of anger or excitement, the fact is that I accept payment in exchange for affection. If you'll notice, I did not use the word "sex" when describing what I do. That's neither out of shame nor embarrassment, rather because sex is only a tiny percentage of what I do. I am proud of what I do, and I enjoy it immensely. I have had the honor and joy of entertaining men and women from all walks of life, professions and of various financial means. There is a misconception that those who seek the company of a paid companion are unable to find companionship on their own or that they are simply of amoral. That might be true in many instances, however, being one who practices the art of courtesanship, I can attest that my experiences have been much different.

DISCUSSION: Is it Selfish to have an Only Child or is it Normal?

Within a few months of my son's birth, I was put on the questioning block, "When are you having another?" I heard that almost as frequently as, "What a cute guy he is." My husband and I had some questions of our own: Would our son be lonely, spoiled, bossy as people tried to tell us. What would it be like for him to grow up without siblings? The "have-another" campaign intensified as our son got older. Some comments were harsh: "How can you do THAT to your child!" "He needs a sibling." If you are considering or have a singleton, you undoubtedly will hear a variation on the theme, "You are being selfish." Were we?
