According to publicist Patti Webster, entertainment columnist Jawn Murray, most notably known as entertainment correspondent for “The Tom Joyner Morning Show” and for his daily column on AOL Black Voices, offered, Friday, a public apology for his joke that many people feel offended black women.
On Wednesday, Murray posted a comment on his Twitter page which read, “All those militant-nappy-headed #AngryBlackWoman (sic) who didn’t think @tylerperry was worthy of doing #ForColoredGirls can #KickRocks!” Murray’s tweet didn’t sit well with a quorum of women who feel his comments were derogatory and offensive to black women overall.
In response to the many negative responses he has received (via Twitter) for what he considers, “a joke which fell flat,” Murray doubled down on it, following up with a tweet reading, “So a few militant-nappy-headed #AngryBlackWomen are mad I used “nappy-headed” earlier. Do me a favor = Get a LIFE & get a PERM! How’s that?”
Murray has posted a public apology on YouTube to clarify his comment and address those who were offended by his words.
Says Murray: “I understand how things can be misconstrued and taken out of context in the social networking space. My humor has always been a bit irreverent, edgy and sarcastic, but I understand how this particular joke could have offended my sisters with natural hair. I sincerely love black women and will never, ever do or say anything to intentionally hurt them. I am truly and humbly sorry.”

Murray’s comments spurred a furious response from readers on ForHarriet.com and MadameNoire.com, both popular blogs serving black women. The former has issued a petition, cuurently in circulation on Twitter, urging those not satisified with Murray’s apology to sign.
In 2007, radio shock jock Don Imus’ on-air simulcast was removed from MSNBC’s morning line-up after he called the Rutgers University women’s basketball team “nappy-headed hos” on his nationally syndicated program.
