So you woke up this morning and it suddenly hit you that it’s Sweetest Day 2010 and you did not get your significant other anything. Whoops! First off, don’t feel bad…I regularly forget my husband’s birthday, so you’re doing better than me already! And to be honest, Sweetest Day is essentially a holiday created by gift companies to sell more product. It has nowhere near the emphasis of Valentine’s Day, but is strategically positioned in October to give the candy and greeting card companies an economic boost. So you can choose to boycott it, but if your significant other is high-maintenance, you’d probably better come up with something fast. Here are some quick and easy way to cover the fact that you forgot and make your sweetheart happy:

  1. Yawn, act casual and take the car for an oil change. While you’re out, stop at the mall and get some Godiva chocolates and/or a balloon bouquet. Do not buy grocery-store flowers. Nothing says “I forgot” more than grocery-store flowers.
  2. You can however, get a stuffed animal from the drugstore, as long as you accompany it with some high-end candy.
  3. Another option for flowers is a potted plant. You can get a nice one at a grocery store too, and tell your darling that the living plant is a symbol of your love. Roses fade after a few day, but a potted plant never dies, just like your love for her/him. If you write that on a nice card, you gain extra points for sentimental value.
  4. Casually drop the information that your honey does not need to cook tonight because you’re taking her/him out to dinner. Then act surprised that she/he didn’t know that. After all, it IS Sweetest Day! Then sneak out to the garage and make a reservation somewhere very swanky.
  5. Alternatively, stop at a drugstore for bubble bath, massage oil and candles. Buy a bottle of wine and the freshest grocery-store roses you can find, then rip all the petals off and throw away the stems. Sprinkle the rose petals around the house, draw a tub of hot water and sprinkle more petals on the surface. Light candles in the bathroom and bedroom and give your sweetie a pampered evening with a hot bath, wine and a massage. For dinner, order in Chinese, or skip it and go right to dessert (in the bedroom).
