You’ve enjoyed their rich, beautiful harmonies for nearly three decades, and all these years later, Take 6 still remains in a class untouched by their musical peers. Ably covering and crossing the genres of gospel, jazz and soul, no other vocal group in music history has as much deserving acclaim as this classically-trained sextet.

If you’re lucky enough to be in Memphis, Tennessee or Birmingham, Alabama this Saturday and Sunday respectively, Take 6 is slated to perform live at The Orpheum Theatre and Old Car Heaven.

Meanwhile, they’ll bring their own brand of heaven this morning, live, in “The Tom Joyner Morning Show’s” In-Studio Jam.

BORN: Claude McKnight III, Alvin Chea, David Thomas, Cedric Dent, Mark Kibble and Joey Kibble.

BIG BREAK: Performing in churches and at local events in Huntsville, Alabama, where its original members all attended Oakwood College. The parlayed their on- and off-campus successes into a record deal in 1987.

RESUME: In Take 6’s nearly 30-year history, they have recorded 12 albums, had three “greatest hits” LPs, performed for four sitting U.S. presidents and worked with artists ranging from Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder and Quincy Jones to Joe Sample, Queen Latifah and Whitney Houston.

BACK STORY: Claude McKnight III (Brian McKnight’s older brother) formed an acappella quartet at Oakwood called Gentlemen’s Estate Club, and when Mark Kibble heard them rehearsing for a performance, he joined in – literally. In fact, he performed with them that very night (Yes, they were practicing in a campus restroom), and the rest, as they say, is history. Kibble’s brother, Joey, joined the group after the departure of Mervyn Warren in 1991.

FUN FACT: Take 6 is the most Grammy-nominated vocal group in the award’s history. The nominations garnered from three songs on their 2008 LP, “The Standard,” brought their total to 23, 10 of which they won.

LATEST WORK: Their third Chistmas album, “The Most Wonderful Day of the Year,” a collection of holiday standards sung in that inimitable Take 6 style.
