CLEVELAND – From Lorain to Cleveland to Akron, and throughout Northeast Ohio, events are planned today to honor the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr.  The annual Martin Luther King Day Breakfast was held at 7:30 this morning at the Marriott Hotel Key Center. NewsChannel5’s Danita Harris is the emcee of this event to honor Dr. King’s legacy and dream of unity through peace.

For the 10th year in a row, The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum is honoring Dr. King through music and by offering free admission starting at 10:30am.

Volunteers from Organizing for America are collecting food items for food pantries in Cleveland and Akron Monday. You can drop of food items at the OFA office at 13100 Shaker Blvd. in Cleveland and at Arlington Church of God in Akron

Karamu House is having a variety of family friendly activities from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Also there’s been a large volunteer effort at Lorain County Community College where volunteers from Big Brothers Big Sisters have been reading books to children about Dr. King. Those who help with Big Brothers Big Sisters will being doing a day of volunteer service starting at 12:45 p.m. Monday and will meet at 1917 North Ride Road in Lorain.

University Circle also has events event planned all day:

  • The Children’s Museum is half price today.
  • Severance Hall honors Dr. King ‘s memory through music from 12-5 p.m.
  • The Cleveland Schools City Choir and Drum Line performs, and the Cleveland Youth Orchestra also performing today.
  • The Cleveland Museum of Art is holding a free arts festival from 11am to 4 p.m.
