President Barack Obama appealed to the nation for political unity in his State of the Union address Tuesday night as he turned his attention to creating jobs and reducing the deficit. He called on Americans to set aside partisan squabbles and summon their “stubborn resilience” to meet the nation’s challenges, much as the US met the Soviet space challenge decades ago. He said “We do big things”.

As expected, he called for a five-year freeze in annual domestic spending—”painful cuts”—but smart investment in other areas to keep the US competitive. “We have to make America the best place on Earth to do business. We need to take responsibility for our deficit, and reform our government. That’s how our people will prosper. That’s how we’ll win the future.” He says anything can be improved but what he’s not willing to do is go back to the days when insurance companies could deny someone coverage because of a pre-existing condition.
