Although actor Idris Elba has worked with media mogul Tyler Perry, he recently revealed that he’s not the biggest fan. While at a recent appearance at Rutgers University, he was asked for his input on the Spike Lee vs Tyler Perry debate and offered this response:

“Can I be candid? I don’t like all of Tyler Perry’s films. Yes, I did work with Tyler for “Daddy’s Little Girls” because it portrayed a positive image of a black father. I am happy for Tyler’s success…we need Tyler Perry…by going to support his movies, we need to show economic strength. But we are also responsible for elevating film. I’m not with buffoonish characters like Madea or Big Momma.”

Interesting enough, earlier this month it was reported that Idris Elba, who was initially slated to play the role of detective Alex Cross in a series of films based on novels by James Patterson, had suddenly lost his role to Tyler Perry. EW reached out to a rep for the film to find out exactly what happened and was told:

“Sure, Idris is a great actor; Tyler Perry is a phenomenon. Tyler Perry is one of the most significant entertainers in all of media. He is a huge cross-media talent and presence — and he’s a terrific actor whose range is going to be shown here. You’re going to see Tyler Perry like you haven’t seen him. He’s 6’5″, he is a linebacker. He is an awesome physical presence and is just going to tear it apart here. It’s an intense, dramatic role.” Block says the film — “a kickass, crusading action picture” — will be the first of several Alex Cross films. “This is going to be the new Tyler Perry franchise, a worldwide one,” he says. “That’s the other thing: Tyler Perry is going to take this to the worldwide audience. It’s just a very different, much bigger opportunity. We went to him! If you can get Tyler Perry or Will Smith, you try.”
