CLEVELAND, Ohio — A Cuyahoga County deputy sheriff is being treated for a fractured leg after authorities said a former Cleveland State University basketball star pushed the deputy down the stairs.

An arrest warrant has been issued for Clinton Smith, 46, after authorities said he injured a deputy sheriff while fleeing the Justice Center this afternoon. Smith starred on the 1986 CSU basketball team coached by Kevin Mackey that upset Indiana University and advanced to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA tournament.

Cuyahoga County SheriffClinton SmithThe incident happened this afternoon when Smith met with his probation officer, said John O’Brien, the sheriff’s spokesman. Smith is on probation for passing bad checks.

 

Smith’s His probation officer learned he had been indicted again for the same crime and  informed Smith he was going to be arrested, O’Brien said.

That’s when Smith ran from the building. In the process, he pushed Deputy Sheriff Larry Jordan down a flight of stairs, breaking his leg, O’Brien said.

Jordan is the most experienced deputy in the county, with 37 years on the job, officials said.

Smith ran from the Justice Center and is at large, O’Brien said.
