MAYFIELD VILLAGE, Ohio – One student is in the hospital and another student is in police custody following an apparent stabbing at Mayfield High School on Friday, Fox 8 News reports.

A Mayfield Village Police spokesperson tells Fox 8 News that a preliminary investigation indicates a 17-year-old suspect used a utility knife to stab his victim — a fellow student — in the neck.

The knife was possibly being used as a tool in one of their classes.

The stabbing occurred after 11 a.m. Friday. The two students involved reportedly had ongoing problems which escalated to Friday’s physical confrontation.

The victim was transported by the Mayfield Village Fire Department to Hillcrest Hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment. His wound is apparently not life-threatening.

The suspect was taken into police custody.

Due to the ages of the parties involved, authorities are not yet releasing names. The investigation is ongoing.
