HANA, Hawaii – The price of gas keeps going up in Northeast Ohio and it’s now averaging about $4.15 a gallon.

But that is nothing compared to a town in Hawaii where a gallon of regular gasoline is going for $6.03, more than $2 above the national average.

Although the price of gasoline keeps rising, the demand for it continues to fall. Reports show that drivers are cutting back on the amount of gas they put in their tanks, which could signal trouble for the economy. Analysts say Americans typically cut back on other spending before they cut back on driving.

Gas prices are up more than 90 cents since January, and some experts have said they believe gas prices could reach up to $5 a gallon this summer on a national average.

And although gas usage is down, gas thefts are up. People are hitting up truck stops, construction sites, or anywhere else where they can find unattended fuel.

Gas stations across the country are also seeing more people filling up their tanks and driving off without paying.

Police Sergeant Jason Townsend said some people are even targeting cars in driveways.

“The most common types of gas thefts are in residential areas during the night hours where suspects will drill out the bottom of a gas tank and steal the gas that way,” Townsend said.

Mechanics said it could cost someone up to $300 to fix a gas tank that gets a hole drilled into it.
