BOSTON – Lebron James has apologized for using an offensive word during a press conference after Saturday night’s game between the Miami Heat and the Boston Celtics.

James said “that’s retarded” under his breath in response to a question being asked of teammate Dwyane Wade. Wade was asked about some people accusing him of dirty play during the Heat game against the Celtics that left Boston’s Rajon Rondo with a dislocated elbow.

James took time during Monday night’s press conference to apologize for what he said.

“I want to apologize for using the ‘R-Word’ after game three. If I offended anyone I sincerely apologize,” James said.

The NBA does have a zero tolerance policy when it comes to bad language. Most recently Kobe Bryant was fined $100,000 for making a homophobic slur. No word on if James will face a similar fine.

Whether he gets fined or not, James is already facing a public campaign against his choice of words by the Special Olympics. That organization immediately started a Twitter and Facebook campaign to push their initiative to “Spread the word to end the word.”
