Meteorologist Mark Johnson confirmed a funnel cloud early in the night after viewer Cyle Ann Gaffney sent in a photo of the cloud passing over homes in North Royalton. Later, we received video from Aman Gurdov that shows the funnel cloud moving across the sky from what appears to be the same storm.
Johnson said it’s hard to tell if the funnel cloud touched down because both the photo and video have trees that are blocking the view of the bottom of the cloud, but he suspects it could have touched down. If a funnel cloud touches the ground, it becomes a tornado.
Also, several photos sent to NewsChannel5 from Portage County indicate what Johnson was seeing on radar earlier in the night — a funnel could that could be a tornado. This was in the Freedom area and Johnson said a tornado touchdown in this area is ‘probable.’
A photo from Alec in Freedom shows a well-defined funnel cloud in this same area.
The National Weather Service will not make a determination as to whether a tornado landed until after assessing the damage on the ground. So far, there are no significant reports of damage that would indicate a powerful tornado.
