Alicia Keys is headed to Broadway – as a producer, that is.
The R&B star, who performed a new song at the BET Awards show, will follow other music icons such as Jay-Z and Elton John in co-producing a new show, due this fall: Stick Fly, a play by Lydia R. Diamond.
“I’m passionate about this play because it is so beautifully written and portrays Black America in a way that we don’t often see in entertainment,” said Keys in a statement.
Described in a press release as “a contemporary comedy of manners” focusing on an affluent black family during a weekend at their home in Martha’s Vineyard, the play had its world premiere in Chicago in 2006 and has since been staged at other regional theaters.
The Broadway production – due to begin previews Nov. 18 and open Dec. 8 – will be directed by Kenny Leon, who guided Denzel Washington and Viola Davis to Tonys in a revival of Fences and will also work with Samuel L. Jackson and Angela Bassett this fall in The Mountaintop.
