Your looks can tell you if your relationship will last

If you have ever seen a couple where the man is gorgeous and the woman is dumpy, you have probably noted the discrepancy even if you didn’t say it out loud. The fact is, attractive men usually go for attractive women and vice-versa.

More from The Stir: Is Porn a Relationship Dealbreaker?

A new study by the University of California shows that when we look for our soul mate, we look at his or her social desirability and try to match our own. In other words, an ugly woman looks for an ugly man and vice-versa.

It makes a lot of sense and is certainly something you see. Do an experiment and rate each member of the next 10 couples you see. I bet 5s are with 5s; 10s are with 10s; and so on. It’s reasonable. The problem, of course, is that status is an odd thing.

Looks are one kind of status, but so are education and wealth. Would you rather have a hot, stupid man or an incredibly smart, not-so-hot one? Give me the latter any day!

The thing is, there is some validity to this study. Most of us are probably with people who are just as attractive as us. Here are some celeb pairings to ponder:

  • Jennifer Garner & Ben Affleck: Easily they are both 8s or 9s. Perfect for one another. they even kind of look alike!
  • Victoria Beckham & David Beckham: Posh and Becks are a good couple in some ways, but in many others, they are mismatched. She has to work incredibly hard to be in his league and the result is somewhat emaciating and unfortunate.
  • Heidi Klum & Seal: These two are an exception. Seal is hot and sensual, but good looks? Not so much. And we all know Heidi Klum is amazing looking. But what he lacks in looks, he more than makes up for in love.
  • Billy Joel & Christie Brinkley: This one was doomed from the start. She is a 10 and he is a 4 on a good day. He can sing, but he has nothing on her in looks. Later, she married her equal in looks, though that also ended badly, so who knows?
